Many concerned Super 8 Motel Owners have attempted to create an organization that would help us create a united voice in our own motel chain. Super 8 Motels was a chain of ECONOMY motels that was founded in South Dakota. The original concept of the parent organization was to develop an economy chain of motels with consistent standards. The guests were to pay a reasonable amount to stay in a nice clean and comfortable motel room. Super 8 clientèle never expected extensive amenities and also never expected to pay excessively. The chain flourished for decades and became one of the premier economy lodging motel systems in the United States and Canada.
Then in the late 1990's Wyndham Corporation (formerly Cendant) bought the rights to the chain. Subsequently, upon purchase they sold all company owned motels and concentrated on franchising only. The focus of the new parent company was to create a profitable corporation which had to answer to its stockholders. Wyndham corporation began to make several decisions that affected the Super 8 Motel operators without any recourse on the corporation. The result has been that Super 8 Owners and Operators have been forced to make unnecessary updates and modifications at their expense. Many of these upgrades have resulted in fees and royalties that are paid back to the corporation and have shown little benefit to the franchisees. The bottom line is that Wyndham corporation has been in the business to improve their corporate Balance Sheet with total disregard for the Super 8 Motel Owners and Operators. All of the motel operators have been forced to absorb the costs that have also helped create an additional source of revenue for Wyndham. There must be a middle ground that both the operators and the parent company can create. We are all in business to make money both the franchisor and franchisee.
Our goals should be to help create a group that can voice their opinions and create common ground with the parent. We must work with them to help create an exceptional business environment where both the Franchisor and Franchisees can flourish.
We have begun to evaluate different fields within the organization that can create some positives for its members. These include evaluating ways to improve the members revenue by discussing different techniques used by other owners. Further, we have began to develop a list of vendors that members have recommended.
